I met Di when we were both teenagers, it was high school. she was among my first friends in SA. I remember she was one of the smart kids in class, she even took computer science as a subject. I did too. #geeksunite! She used to literally do my homework for me. She was so good at Playstation games that she could thrash all the boys, if we did have any at school...

When I last saw her at the You & Me Market I was surprised to find out that she has decided to brave the world of fashion leaving behind the stressful life as a computer genius.

She always had impeccable taste in clothes. Her dress sense is that of the clean &classic aesthetic without being too minimal. Loads of tailored &detailed items to add sophistication to an otherwise bland combination. yep, she definitely has a good eye, maybe two.

just a side note, I can totally rock some of these sleek basics with sneakers and a 'comme' cardi.

I havent been bloggin for a while....loving spring time and the great outdoors. Rocking the Daisies was crazy. only fully came back to reality an entire week afterwards. Also, amidst the second wave of twitter addiction hitting me hard (follow @yangiswa for some all day BS and non stop yapping) The Dim Sums were getting much love at the You&Me Market, thanks to those who came and supported, I realised that my true purpose is to feed people. As Bob Marley said, 'a hungry man is an angry man' !!! a way to a man (or just people in general) 's heart is through the stomach. too true. so again, thank you to those who came through, and trust me, more varieties, new and improved recipes coming soon.

Not forgetting Doe, my first born. She is doing it again.

I still remember the day I first heard Uffie's music, I was way too excited! I get excited about seeing women doing their thing, bringing bold flavours into all kinds of arts. Its a man's world, we cant deny that. We can dress words up all day and call it however we want, as women we have to try that much harder at EVERYTHING! but alas, somebody is not giving an eff and i much admire that quality in these women (Married to the MOB crew for one, Hellz Bellz' founder Lanie, Billionaire Boys Club PR and Jewelry designer Yoon, Mademe Clothing crew, I'm sure many more we dont know about) I admire them for their lack of wanting to please, nor do they want to simply eat, sleep and pray daily...they want more, they crave life and you can see it in their work...

As the birthday came and gone, another year ahead...with age, I'm slowly getting more comfy with my own skin. My head is clearer and I see more. and the rest? as they say, will be history.

Fuzzy's exhibition last night was followed by drunken after party and mid night swimming in a heated pool, haha. le good life avec friends.

This morning started late, fried up an all day breakfast burger, my body just couldn't resist the grease! was soooooo goood.

At least i made it to work. well it essentially involves switching on my Mac, and start working. Even that took a while.

The good people at Shelflife store sent over this press pack on their collaboration with Puma.

As they say, the concept behind it is blending iconic elements of the two brands and producing a new mix of flavor and symbols that is specific to South Africa. I like the fact that Puma appreciates local street art and culture and is keen to work with local artists and brands. Bravo to Shelflife, I have no doubt it is a dope range, that's what it means to 'not promise what it can't deliver'.

I just want to end this by saying, I HAVE THE COLLABORATION ENVY! I'm just saying.

Hello all, I have the worst hay fever of the (i will repeat) WORST kind. I feel that my nose is about to fall off. Spring is pretty but, not so in my world! I would actually do a rain dance if it does rain in Cape Town tonight, because I need them damn pollen to be washed away!!!! agggg man. here's to spring...yay. and to trees being killed in the form of tissues and my brain crying a river.

nonetheless. I only stumbled upon this today, im sure its not new news to most..i shall share it anyway...

Street artist JR's new series called 'Unframed', taking source images by Man Ray, Copa and Salgado etc. and pasting them in different spaces around the world, giving new meanings and contexts to the same places.

These were done in an Images festival at a small Swiss town. word on the street is that he will take the project around the world.

Interesting and very cool.

He's worth the attention not because he's a lecrush but because I honestly think that Lebo is touching on something really interesting here. A multi dimensional account on Africans living in China. OK so this is an interview I've been wanting to do with Lebo about his thoughts on Sino, life, and China...

Hello,please tell us about the film, in your words, what is it about?

Sino is a short film about a co-incidental meeting between two Africans in Beijing, China. Through their interactions, the film deals with issues such as the challenges of resettlement and some of the complexities that ultimately arise from the xenophobic elements inherent in the Franco-phone-Anglophone exchange.

How is this story relevant in the world? (why make this film?)

Because its part of a larger global conversation about Africans writing their own history and telling their stories own through their perspective.

Why the name 'Sino'?

Sino is a prefix and it refers to relations with China.

The two main characters' experiences, are they in anyway resembled that of yours? I think the South African guy was maybe you...wrong?

Haha… everyone always asks me if the South African is me. No Sino is not a biopic, but the experiences of the characters are very real. Otherwise I wouldn’t have made a film about it.

I think its interesting that while it explores the experience of Africans living in China, yet through the displacement, it not only revealed how little China and Africa havent really interacted with eachother,( both have been engaging with the West for a long time) ; it also shown the mutual beef between South Africans and other Africans, in other words, xenophobia. where do you think this beef (xenophobia) comes from?

Xenophobia is something that is still mind-boggling for me, but I have made peace with my understanding of it. My point is, I think after ’94, a lot people expected change on all levels, with misguided ideas on how long it would take. So to this day, we are still waiting for jobs and housing, and when people from other parts of Africa come to South Africa and do the crappy jobs we don’t want, because, “ how can I still be a street sweeper now if I was street sweeper then?” (I mean that general attitude is quite pervasive amongst South Africans right? As in, a sense of entitlement or awaiting a reward, particularly after being the victims of Apartheid?). And so it’s really infuriating for us, and we take out a lot of our frustrations on people from other parts of Africans. That’s just one aspect though, this topic is very complex.

So when we last discussed while in China, you mentioned that it was a Trilogy, and this is only Part I. any hint on the direction its going for the next two parts?

Yeah, totally. Part 2 is going to be wild. I’m gonna act in it, which still kinda freaks me out a little. The pre-production is all done; I just need to finish up current projects and start shooting really. I have been making notes for part 3 for a while now. All 3 movies deal with the same subject matter, which is, the African Diaspora living in Beijing. There are recurring characters who play the same roles, for example, Dubois is also in part 2 but only has a cameo. In part 2 I have a central role, but I only feature a little in part 3. I wouldn’t say the movies are sequential, but they are related and well connected in their principles and sensibilities.

On filmmaking, what is your preferred style/preferences/references?

That totally depends on context. Different people do different things really well, like Errol Morris, for example, makes great documentaries, but I wouldn’t say his commercials are as inspiring, you know what I mean? Let me give you a “for instance”. For the next part in the trilogy, as part of the pre-production, I watched a lot of older Wang Kar Wai’s movies , just because of how many “perfect shots” there are in movies like “Chunking express” or “Days of being Wild”. For Sino, I watched Borom Saret over and over again. It’s a little circumstantial. Now when I watch “Sino” and I can easily admit that technically it is quite average, but when I was working on it, that didn’t matter. I just needed to make it. But now I want to pay more attention to things like getting the “perfect shot”.

What are your favorite things about film making?

I guess it would have to be the privilege and gift of been able to share precious things, which I care about and I know other people care about, and creating a space where we can enjoy and honor those things together.

What are your top four favorite films?

I promised myself I would never answer questions like that. But off the top of my head, the four films that have had the biggest impact on me recently are; Diaspora by Claire Denis, Borom Saret by Ousmane Sembene, Sans Soleil by Chris Marker, and “Burden of dreams” by Les banks. But this selection is very specific to whats going on around me now, if you asked me again in a month it would probably be different.

I cant remember) and anyway, the sight of it all was a little too surreal and a little too perfect.

Max and I were at The Boogie last week, and ran into an artist from New York. We had a great convo about lotsa things, life, people, art, the term contemporary, photography. Although I had a bit more gluwein than i should in the afternoon, due to passing learners celebrations avec Carine. I do remember a lot of the conversation. It was, as they say, enlightening.

Hank is a photo conceptualist. is it somewhat like an art director?

In this show titled "All things being equal", he simply explored the language of the Advert, how the Ad is so embedded in our everyday thinking, that using this language to express visually can reach more audience. He based his ideas of this show on the concept of race. re exploring race in this modern visual language shed a new light on, in my opinion, how ideas of race have transformed but still so relevant in our lives. Which i thought was impressive. clean, simple, gets under your skin. A man of few words, but every word weighs a great deal. I was learning.

Unfortunately no snapshots of the social aspect of the opening. But you can go here for some.

I'm a photo nut. I look at pictures 90 percent of my time on the net. My preferences for photographs...well, none. I guess as long as I am moved. The moment my eyes catches that of the image capturer's, i'm sold. My point is, there is no right or wrong to look at images, the moment belongs to you, no one can take it away from you. I think thats why i love photography. It gives me freedom and a little privacy. For years, my 'sifu' always tells me to keep looking at pictures everyday, he said the eyes are like any muscles in your body, you have to keep exercising it to keep it fit and healthy...one day, you will realize what kind of aesthetics you prefer..

..still looking...

for years, loved and obsessed over a lot of different kinds of images. What always grabs me, what i often get so organically, is that of the unpretentious, documentary style, off beat and cold toned, or high contrasted black and white images that surrounds a raw subject matter, something that feels really honest.

I fall in and out of love with some favorites of mine, as I engage in my mind with my own growth and constant changes in my views. I always come back to the same place, where I want truth to be told, where things are a little less glossy, a little more open is what I want.

In case you start wondering if I'm still talking about photography. I am. I've decided to profile some of my favorite-photographers -of- the -moment here. So first up >>

Amanda Lopez

She was born and grew up in Cali, USA. Started taking photographs at a young age. Worked, developed and exhibted in LA and the Bay Area...shot for XXL, Vibe and shown with Hamburgereye and Upperplayground (ask the Shelflife peeps for books if you want more info). I could get all academic on her work but you can see for yourself. She is definitely part of the raw movement, some of her images bring up uneasiness that isn't pretty for all, but she manages to bring it back to a place of beauty and strength, which is a rare talent...

I have such season envy, some of my good friends are now in the northern hemisphere, having the greatest of times. i miss summer, it makes life so much better. The same goes with people, some people just radiates sunshine, its like they walk around with this amazing halo around them, as if nothing ever gets them down...My friend Khotso, is one of them, im sure he has bad days but i almost cant imagine it. no matter what happens, he's always tearing it up. its soothing to be around human sunshines. and inspiring. i cannot wait for summer.

Speaking of the upcoming summer, i think i will get on that over due mission of taking under water photographs. because everytime i see pictures like these, and heart sings a love song...

Hey, fell off the radar, apologies.

Its winter, hibernation and reflection time. so i bought a huge video store contract and decide to lump on the couch on weekends in the warmth of my own home getting some quiet inspiration on my little silver screen...and i came across 'away we go'...

If you haven't seen, go hire it at the DVD store near you. it may be old news to some of you...but I really, really enjoyed it.

Its directed by Sam Mendes...about a couple who's expecting their first child on a journey finding their perfect 'home'...the story is so simple, but the film is so full, of colors, emotions, great dialogues and surprises.

The sound track is great, i stole it off Sindi's laptop and has since been on rotation in my stereo, computer, ipod, and if i could, i would declare the entire album as the sound track of my life at this moment.

been having a few girlie moments, wondering about what my future would look like, apart from career, will i have a family? own a house? children? dogs? where will i live? or will i just be like Peggy Guggenheim and have shiploads of puppies, paintings, and crazy life stories?

even a warrior needs to sit at the side of a river and ponder from time to time...about future battles...this one is no exception.

Recently, fashion houses like LV and Chanel, and photographers Lisa Edsalv and Fulvio Bonavia, have delved into the topic of Food as Fashion by creating a direct fusion between the two. In my opinion the two go together so well because both can become such fantastic indulgences.

Of course, this opinion isn’t shared by all. Many in the fashion world will tell you that indulging too much in one of these two (EATING!!) will totally affect the ability to indulge in and enjoy the other fully. With fashion on the other hand, the view is completely different, and too much is never enough. In fact, being able to over-indulge is just pure luck, will render you the envy of the town, and is totally beneficial to our endorphin levels…

Perhaps the answer then, is to indulge in the two in similarly cautious and mindful ways. When it comes to food, the I spend the most on those the good stuff. The fresh veg, starches and proteins take up most of my refrigerator, but I also love spoiling myself and eating a really interesting and fun gourmet treat every now and then to keep the palate alive and kicking! And with my fashion palate, it’s no different.

Your staples are best kept selective and classic, with the workhorse pieces being things like those white blouses, those perfect black cigarette jeans, or those boots that you spent a fortune on but have taken you through three winters. On top of that, come the extras that are added in as fashion dictates, and The Fad creates. Depending on what is en mode at the time, I select what to add to my “timeless” collection, instead of getting a zillion things in one week which only look great on me during that week.

So when it comes to food and fashion don’t be afraid to indulge, but remember that overindulging too much in either could be causing you to digest your dress!

My sifu in photography/good friend (Brett Rubin) seems to be tres busy these days sparkling away with his lady, stylist Nicole Van Heerden/ the girl with sexy shoes, on many levels, this one is the powerhouse dream team's new project... photographing the Blk Book installation by Black Coffee.

Apparently there is an experimental film coming soon, wonder if its showing at a screen near me? because i'd be there in a second. My eyes have always enjoyed looking at Black Coffee's visual affairs.

During my travels in Europe, i was delighted (batting eyelashes) to have landed in this beautiful town in Belgium. Its very old, like 1800 years old, or even older (wiki this fact, but im 90%sure). Antwerp has many subtle claims to fames, home to some of the greatest artists of the Baroque period, also to the world's contemporary fashion designers and architects, famous art and design schools, museum land, diamond central, and has the most famously delicious waffles, chocolates and fries...and if i were to personify the city, i would imagine it to be a SHE, and she is aging gracefully, she was a glamourous actress a long time ago, now she is always draped in pastel colored silk, and loves sunset walks on the riverbank. She reminded me of sophiscated femininity.

I loved her medieval streets and gothic style architecture. I was lost all the time, following narrow streets getting distracted by details, details, and so much of details! she reminded me to pay attention.

Fashion museum (MOMU) was an interesting place (Antwerp has a museum for everything), an exhibition about black clothing, featuring silhouettes by some of fashion's favorite designers and houses, who have special connection with black...like Chanel, Givenchy, Gareth Pugh and more...there were so much to absorb, to unlearn and to learn!

Think Twice (T2) is an a-m-a-z-i-n-g vintage store, but its not advisable to go there after you have visited the fashion museum, it will be like going grocery shopping on an empty stomach, you will end up bankrupting yourself by buying the whole store--which is what would've happened to me if i had inconveniently brought my cash card.

there are so many experiences i would recommend you to have, like going to the annual fun fair which has been happening for almost a hundred years--buy a beer, get on the carousel and watch the sunset with a friend.... eat loads of candy floss...and waffles and ice cream and fries till your stomach hurts...Go to a hat shop. buy a hat. go to all the galleries (ALL of them)...and they do have a very big H&M there. haha. except for jumping into the river, dont do it, the current will kill you. for real.

guess my point is, when traveling in europe, dont skip Belgium. of course Paris and Berlin are the spots but you will be surprised to find gems along the way, don't be afraid to jump off the train and pick them up.

last night i watched A Single Man, and if you haven't seen it yet then I suggest you do so. It is without a doubt one of the best movies I've ever seen, seriously.
Beautiful story but mostly beautifully shot, Tom Ford is pretty genius in this regard.
Anyway he has also filled the film with clothes and boys to make you drool to death.
My favourite was supermodel Jon Kortajarena who makes a little cameo.

It's safe to say he's the best looking man in the world.

well i'm here to tell you that i'm still here, just tryna keep up with crazy lifestyle, unpacking, moving house blah blah blah.

aunty has decided to extend her trip so she's not back yet (you could call it false alarm friday).

anyway random crush update, the fancy illustrator came into my office on friday!! almost fainted off my chair. plus i saw dog guy at neighbourhood on friday night, exciting friday i know ;) all this amongst buying art, midday drunkness and airport missions.

my new couch came yesterday so i am beyond excited! i am going to make a roast chicken to celebrate (it seems like a reasonably homely thing to do right?).

oooo also I watched New Moon on sunday night (wow), I'm not even going to front, I am a big fan of the twilight books (BIG), but the Twilight movie was CRAP, however if I can just say New Moon was pretty AWWWEESOME. yes i know, i feel like a teenager again (it might have something to do with the unreasonabley goodlooking men in the movie too). even bella's dad was starting to look not so bad. point is that it made me think i am going to die alone, GAWSH! who can remember the last time someone looked at them like jake or edward look at bella. i know i said i wasn't going to be writing but this event does call for a moment of silence and some honour. Malcom McLaren passed away last night, some of you may be wondering who that is. I'm thinking back to my first lecture about pop culture and hearing about this incredible man. Apart from being the manager of the Sex Pistols as well as helping to create the band, he was part of the pioneering team that brought the punk fashion look into its first shop. He did this together with Vivienne Westwood at their shop called SEX. He was a pioneer and we have him and Ms Westwood to thank for the punk style we all rock today.

so what's all this about anyway? well Mr Spoek Mathambo has been a friend of mine since I was a kid, and a friend of DOE's for a while now. He's just embarked of a solo project with a totally fresh band. SPOEK MATHAMBO & MSHINI WAM. The band features friends of DOE Jakob Snake & Richard The Third.

Spoek asked me to help with building the costumes for this video, first for the band. We had smallest budget but a fucking great team so thanks for all the help, and BIG UP PUMA for hooking us up. so anyway this was my first project actually building costumes as opposed to styling, also first Anthea X Spoek project.

I have NO idea how it got to be Thursday already, but I guess that's nothing to complain about.

I am actually broke so pretty excited for the month to be running away with itself. Got a trip to the bush next week so pretty excited about all that, so good to get out of the city and catch up with friends. Anywaaaaay it's been a pretty good week, got some new gear so that was nice. Am missing aunty though, keep driving past the turnoff to her house and getting emotional!

Tonight we're going to Stellenbosch for first night out there ever, I'm kind of afraid. Have no idea what to expect other than cane & creamsoda. but anywaaaaay.

so you may have noticed I keep loading videos etc, it's also because I have no idea how to use the song player (aunty is the tech support over herrrrre).

some of you may or may not have noticed that cape town was a little hot over the weekend.

those of you not in cape town just to give you some insight, WE ALMOST DIED OF HEATSTROKE. It was 32 degrees at 22:00 last night, i mean really. anyway hot sundays can go either way can't they? we made it go the right one. afternoon swimming and the most epic evening braai of all time. i really don't want to sound cheezy but there's no other way, it was such a fuckn great day. night swimming at our friends old house which is now his moms office which happens to have an epic view of the whole city and mountain etc. i don't even have pictures. i just wanted to share the pure joy with y'all.

so what's the point of all this? appreciate your friends. get to know people better. open your mind. and swim at night.

thank fashion it's friday.

just a quick note to say IT'S THE WEEKEND! nothing much to report, the week is winding down and I need some damn rest buuuuut tonight we're going dancing at the assembly. our homies MUSICAL CHAIRS from jozi are gona be on the decks so there is a definate need to party. so i'm putting this here cause i'd love some feedback, i know it's old and all but just hear me out. i'm sure you all know afrikan boy- i guess i never expected him to look so cute and fresh and kind of fun. i suppose i thought he was going to look like some heavy days gangster or sumthn. anyway what about this video? can't make my mind up. wierd or kind of cool?

okay it's very rare that an advert actually evokes any kind of real emotion in me. like that wimpy one where the albino kid feeds his dog a sausage, it's just wierd. anyway this advert almost had me in tears at my desk, but it is SO rad. especially loving the soundtrack. big up www.10and5.com for leading us in the right direction.

I feel like a new person. I had the best freakn weekend of my life, caught up on sleep, didn’t do anything I didn’t want to. Cleaned, went to happy feet with aunty. It was just perfect. I think this whole Chinese new year has had more of a spiritual affect on me than I may have realised. I feel like a new person. But that aside I had such a revelation last night over a 2am glass of wine with Poopy. Couldn’t figure out why I felt so lost, felt like I was missing academia and didn’t know what was wrong. Couldn’t remember where this journey began or why. Now I know. It began with a fascination with identity. How we build our identities though popculture and subculture. How these show us what’s going on in the social, economic and political spheres of our country and the world. That’s how fashion became so important to me. It was a visual representation of how you’re in the process of building your identity. Okay academia and life I’m ready for you again.

YEAR OF THE TIGER. NEW LIFE.

One night as i flicked through the ever so boring South African free TV stations, to come across Desparately seeking Suan, a film starring the young Madonna, a tale of mistaken identity set in New York. i searched for it at video stores, and finally watched it in full length. loved it. been humming its sound track ever since.
